Written by Andreas Berger
Sunday, 02 November 2008 18:22

The bretteleben.de "Simple Picture Slideshow" Plugin for Joomla!2.5 and Joomla!3.1 is a - as the name says - simple plugin to display a slideshow in content items. The images get faded out, this effect works with current major browsers. You decide if the slideshow starts automatically on pageload or is started by clicking a link/button in the content item.

Features:

- supports .jpg, .png und .gif
- can be aligned in your content item left, right, centered, float left or float right
- as many slideshows per content item as you want
- every slideshow can be configured individually (Parameter Overrides)
- optional show title and/or text with every single picture (Captions)
- optional show default title/text for the whole slideshow
- optional link every single image to a different target (Links)
- optional use a default link for the whole slideshow
- option to start on pageload or click
- optional control elements (start, stop, back next, counter)
- activate/deactivate and align (left/right) every single control element
- choose between text-links and buttons as controls

New in Version 1.5.8:

- language files
- available for Joomla!3.1

Installation and Usage

A step by step tutorial on installation and usage can be found at Howto Plugin .
The possibilities the code inside the article offers can be found at Howto Plugin Code .

Notice before update:
If you have modified the style sheet besps.css, save it before update, it gets overwritten.

Limitations/Todo

The feature to load images after pageload works in a fire&forget-mode, will say, when showing the picture, the script does not check, if the dummy has already been replaced with the real picture. This will be one point to work with for future releases.

Compatibility

The plugin is tested successful with Joomla 2.5 and 3.1. Anyway, using it aside with one or another existing plugin/modul/component may bring to light problems i haven't foreseen. I suggest a test run before using it on a live site and stand by for your questions and suggestions.

The plugin is licensed under the GNU Public License (www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).

Is there a Module version?
65 Thursday, 05 January 2012 15:44
Frances

Really like the functionality but really need it as a module, is there a version? Or do you have code that I could use to call the Simple Slideshow from a custom_mod. Thanks Frances

Hi Frances!

No, there is no module version of this plugin and not all modules allow to use content plugins. Refer to the page FAQ&Troubleshooting (menu at the left), it deals with this topic and lists two extensions, that allow to use the plugin this way.
In general: If the usage at a module position is the main purpose of the slideshow I suggest to use a slideshow explicitly developed as a module.

Problem with font

I just want to ask one thing that can we change the font size of Title(Caption) and the text

@Nischal

A. Berger

Hi Nischal!

To change the font (family, size, ...) of the captions, open the stylesheet of the plugin /plugins/content/plugin_besps/besps.css (Joomla!1.5) with a text editor.
The selectors ".besps_caps div span {}" (title line) and ".besps_caps div span + span {}" (text line) set the appearance of the captions.

Picture name

Stephan

Hello,

I am using the simple picture slideshow and am very satisfied with it. I just have one question. Has anyone a clou to disappear the picture name? When I stop with the mouse on the picture slide show (just stopping, no clicking), the name of the picture (e.g. img_3023.jpg) will appear in a small windows below the mouse courser.

Would be nice.

Hi Stephan!

Up till now there is no backend setting to achieve this, but you can add an empty default caption. This solves the problem.

{*besps}folder{/besps*}
{*besps_c}0|||{/besps_c*} ... without the asterisks

A. Berger

Hi sfit!

I confess, I'm not sure if I understand your problem, but if it is the fact, that the plugin always shows all of the image files within a folder, that's the way it is built and to change this, you would have to hack the plugin.
If I didn't get you right, please give it another try and - if your first language accidentally is German - dann bitte auf Deutsch.

Installing SPS

Matthew

I have followed the installation instructions at each stage. However, when I have added the code to article, the message comes up as

could not find folder

I have kept the root as images and made sure I have not repeated the foldname name in the code. Any suggestions?

Hi Vonn!

The link delivers an Error 404. This problem is definitely not caused by the plugin.

Hi Matthew!

Make sure that the directory permissions for the folder are configured properly (755 - folder, 644 - images).
Next, open the article, switch to HTML-view and make sure that the code for the slideshow is not fragmented with HTML-tags.

If these steps do not solve the problem, please provide a link to the page, I will have a look at it.

Mosets Tree slide show
60 Wednesday, 30 November 2011 17:22
Phil

Hi, Have a look at this link www.yumping.co.uk/climbing/awesome-walls-stockport--e19622662

Here the directory entry has a picture gallery with an accompanying slide show. I would like to achieve something similar in Mosets tree for each data record. Your simple picture slideshow looks like a great tool but I wonder whether it can be used in the context of a Mosets Directory record? How should the code be modified to pass the graphics to the slide show from the record?

I'm sorry but I haven't worked with Mosets Tree up till now and therefore have no idea how to port the plugin.

Slideshow auf Startseite funktioniert nicht.

Christine

@sonja

A. Berger

Hallo sonja!

Andreas

XHTML Validation

Justin Wyatt

Awesome plugin... BUT

It's failing to validate xhtml due to a couple of open
tags:
[removed code because it breaks layout]
Can you advise, what's going wrong with my code please.?

Cheers
Justin

@Justin

A. Berger

Hi Justin!

The error is the result of a paragraph (p) your WYSIWYG-editor wraps around the code for the slideshow automatically. The plugin tries to remove such paragraphs but in a very conservative way to avoid breaking a desired layout instead of preventing a Validation Error.

Open the article (module content), switch to HTML-view, remove the tag and save. This should solve the problem.
If the code is intentionally set inside a paragraph, end the paragraph before the code and restart is after the code.

Andreas

XHTML validation

Justin

Hi Andreas,

It looks like the problem comes when I wrap the plugin into an 'articles anywhere' to get it into a module.

Example: http://www.webkeyit.com/
Error Line 89, Column 44: document type does not allow element "div" here; missing one of "object", "applet", "map", "iframe", "button", "ins", "del" start-tag

I realise this could be an issue with this approach with 'article anywhere' BUT any tips would be great

Hi Justin!

If I check the page with the W3C Validator (validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwebkeyit.com%2Findex.php%2Fslideshow-plugin) the result is:

This document was successfully checked as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!

Hi David!

Have a look at the page "Howto Plugin Code" (menu at the left), it explains the feature "Parameter Overrides" which allows to override the backend setting for a specific slideshow by adding "parameter=value"-pairs to the code in the article. E.g.:

{*besps}folder1|auto=1{/besps*} ... starts at pageload, irregardless of backend settings
{*besps}folder2|auto=0{/besps*} ... does not start at pageload, irregardless of backend settings
... without the asterisks

Best regards
Andreas
