Sunday, 02 November 2008 18:22

The bretteleben.de "Simple Picture Slideshow" Plugin for Joomla!2.5 and Joomla!3.1 is a - as the name says - simple plugin to display a slideshow in content items. The images get faded out, this effect works with current major browsers. You decide if the slideshow starts automatically on pageload or is started by clicking a link/button in the content item.

Features:

- supports .jpg, .png und .gif
- can be aligned in your content item left, right, centered, float left or float right
- as many slideshows per content item as you want
- every slideshow can be configured individually (Parameter Overrides)
- optional show title and/or text with every single picture (Captions)
- optional show default title/text for the whole slideshow
- optional link every single image to a different target (Links)
- optional use a default link for the whole slideshow
- option to start on pageload or click
- optional control elements (start, stop, back next, counter)
- activate/deactivate and align (left/right) every single control element
- choose between text-links and buttons as controls

New in Version 1.5.8:

- language files
- available for Joomla!3.1

Installation and Usage

A step by step tutorial on installation and usage can be found at Howto Plugin .
The possibilities the code inside the article offers can be found at Howto Plugin Code .

Notice before update:
If you have modified the style sheet besps.css, save it before update, it gets overwritten.

Limitations/Todo

The feature to load images after pageload works in a fire&forget-mode, will say, when showing the picture, the script does not check, if the dummy has already been replaced with the real picture. This will be one point to work with for future releases.

Compatibility

The plugin is tested successful with Joomla 2.5 and 3.1. Anyway, using it aside with one or another existing plugin/modul/component may bring to light problems i haven't foreseen. I suggest a test run before using it on a live site and stand by for your questions and suggestions.

The plugin is licensed under the GNU Public License (www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).

Side column?

I love your Simple Picture Slideshow - have used it several times.  Taking it a step further -- is there a simple way to put the slideshow in the right column (not in the content body area)?

Hi Tim!

If you want to show the slideshow at a module position, you could use a module for custom content, or a module to embed articles in modules. Anywhere, there are limitations.
First, not all of these extensions allow the plugin (or content plugins at all) to work. The page FAQ&Troubleshooting lists two extensions (there may be more - if you find one, please let me know) that allow the plugin to be used at module positions.
Secondly, please be aware that - even if the plugin works this way - the fact that a module is not an article - up till now (till the next version is out) causes problems if you are going to use multiple instances of the plugin on one page because the plugin will not be able to write unique identifiers for JavaScript and CSS. If you need multiple instances on one page, I would indeed use a slideshow, explicitly developed as a module.

Ampersand in Titles/Captions
14 Friday, 22 April 2011 01:57

How can I have an ampersand in the title/caption ie "Ben & Jerry"?

Straight up '&' doesn't seem to work and '& amp;' didn't either...
Any thoughts?

Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony!

The good news: There is no bug.
The bad news: Because there is no bug - there is no fix.

Let me explain:
You upload the image 1&2.jpg.
You try to add a caption in the article using the code {*besps}0|1&2.jpg|title|text{besps*}. (without asterisks)
You save the article.
You open the slideshow.
The image 1&2.jpg displays the caption title/text.

Why isn't this working on your site? Because 1 step is missing in my list. Check what happens on your (I know it's not really yours - anyway) site:

You upload the image 1&2.jpg.
You try to add a caption in the article using the code {*besps}0|1&2.jpg|title|text{besps*}.
You save the article.
THE WYSIWYG-editor changes the code to: {*besps}0|1& amp;2.jpg|title|text{besps*} (without the blank)
You open the slideshow.
The image 1&2.jpg does not display the caption because "1&2.jpg" != "1& amp;2.jpg" (without the blank).

Now, is this a bug of the plugin? I say: No, it isn't.
First, it's everybody's personal decision to activate/deactivate the WYSIWYG-editor in the Joomla! global configuration and to allow the editor to change/modify the written content.
Second, give it a try and (a) deactivate the editor in your local test environment, than (b) upload the images "1&2.jpg" and "1& amp;2.jpg" (again without the blank) into the same folder. They can exist happily side by side. Now (c) create captions for both images. You will see, everything works fine, you can create captions for both images and that's the way the plugin should work.
I will not intentionally integrate a bug into the plugin that prevents users from attaching captions to their "1& amp;2.jpg" - images by patching the plugin to attach captions set for "1& amp;2.jpg" to "1&2.jpg".

Ampersand in filename
Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:41
TonyW

I have setup a temporary Joomla site of my own to do some testing and have found that it is the filename not the title/caption that is causing the issue, it surprises me but that is what the tests prove.

So now is the question how to fix it, so it does not matter if there is an ampersand in the filename.

Hi Andreas

The code that is going in is

{besps_c*}0|C019_M&K.jpg|Michael & Kym (Set Subject)|Credit - A Grade By: Lyn Fedrick{/besps_c*}{besps_c*}0|C070_T_Bride.jpg|Tenterfield Bride (Set Subject)|Credit - A Grade By: Mike Green{/besps_c*}{besps*}monthly_comps/test{/besps*}

(Minus the *)

- post the version of the plugin are you using.
Joomla 1.5 - Version 1.5.3

- post the Joomla! Version are you using.
Joomla 1.5

- post the encoding of your website.
The charset is UTF-8

- provide a link to the page.
The problem test show is at

http://www.mgps.org.au/home/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=108&Itemid=67

Note I am not the admin for site, I have written a PHP page that creates the code for your plugin from an excel spreadsheet of results. And noticed that the image with an ampersand in the title was not displaying the caption info, and when I checked the source of the page I could see it was not been placed in the page source... I will ask the admin if it is possible to update the slideshow code to 1.5.5, perhaps that will fix it, he mentioned that removing the "& ", it worked fine.

Hi Tony!

Just inserting '&' in the WYSIWIG-editor, which gets automatically replaced with '& amp;' (without the blank) in the source works fine for me.
Please:
- post the version of the plugin are you using.
- post the Joomla! Version are you using.
- post the encoding of your website.
- provide a link to the page.

Is there anyway to display thumb nails?
13 Thursday, 21 April 2011 06:22
anna

Hi, I am new to joomla.

I am trying to figure out gallery with the following functionalities.

1. picture slidshow
2. thumb nail

I am wondering if this plug-in doesn't support thumb nail?
Well, I have tried http://www.bretteleben.de/lang-en/joomla/very-simple-image-gallery.html and it works fine but this plug-in doesn't support picutre slidshow.
So I tried http://www.bretteleben.de/lang-en/joomla/simple-picture-slideshow.html and this doesn't support thumb nail.
Both worked fine but I need picture sliding and thumb nail both. Please help. What do I need to do?

Hi Anna!

Thanks for your interest in my extensions but as already suggested yesterday (http://www.bretteleben.de/lang-en/component/content/article/39-kommentare/6839-how-can-i-manage-one-hide-thumb-nails-two-pop-up-lightbox.html), instead of trying to patch an extension to fit your needs I would check the about 500 extensions in the category "Photos & Images" at extensions.joomla.org for an extension that fits your needs out of the box.

centre controls beneath
12 Wednesday, 20 April 2011 23:28
Erik

Is there a way to centre the controls beneath the pictures?

@erik
Monday, 25 April 2011 14:45
A. Berger

Hi Erik!

You are right - my fault. What I posted goes for the captions, not the controls.
Let's center the controls:
They consist of a left and a right part (you decide in the backend where to show a control by using the minus sign as separator). We will center the right part of the controls:

In the stylesheet /plugins/content/plugin_besps/besps.css add 'width:0%' to the selector .besps_ctrl_left {} and add 'text-align:center !important;width:99%;' to the selector .besps_ctrl_right {}. That's it.

If you are reffering to the caption thats not what i mean.
I want to centre the button controls so that they appear in the centre below the pictore and not only left or right.

Andreas

Tried it in my localhost enviroment:
.besps_caps {text-align:center;vertical-align:bottom;line-height:0;font-size:0;margin:0;padding:0;}

Controls are still alligned according to the settings in the plugin screen so this change does noet have any visbile effect.

Yes. open the stylesheet /plugins/content/plugin_besps/besps.css and add "text-align:center;" to the selector .besps_caps {}.

still checking files to modify slide visibility
11 Monday, 18 April 2011 18:36
Karen

Yes thank you I got it up and working.  I have done everything i can think of ot make all the slides visible even when they are not on top.  The latest thing I did., after your suggestion to modify the besps.php file was this:  $bs_style.=".besps_slides_".$identifier." div {visibility:visible;z-index:1;position:absolute;left:0;top:0;width:".$bs_width_."px;height:".$bs_height_.    where I set the slide with z-index '1'  (slide not on top) to visible.  That's what I did elsewhere, set the z-index slides to visible.  I WAS able to get slides to show up underneath with each mouse click on the 'start' and 'stop' buttons, but for some reason I can't get the slides to show when I press 'start' and it is in slideshow mode. I am not a coder like  you :)  I am just guessing at all this.  I will keep looking in the files you mention tho and try to figure it out, thanks.

Hi Karen!

The JavaScript besps.js checks/sets visibility, zIndex and opacity of the current and the next image before every slide, after every slide, at every action like start/stop/prev/next and it is therefore the file that needs the heaviest modifications.

Trying to set all slides to visible
9 Sunday, 17 April 2011 03:55
Karen

Hi I love this plugin.  I am trying to make it so that every slide is visible even when it is underneath, and has a z-index of 1 instead of 2.  I figured I would change them all to opacity of 1.  I notice that the slides in the slideshow show this code when I click on them (I am viewing my site with the webdeveloper firevox addon  'firebug'  which shows code).

div id="img_191_0_4" style="z-index: 1; visibility: visible; opacity: 0;"> img src="http://localhost/BRGH/images/simpleslideshow/d.png" border="0" alt="d" title="d" style="left: 80px; top: 0px; width: 640px; height: 400px;" /> /div>

So I added these lines to the CSS sheet for besps:

div img_191_0_1 {z-index: 1; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_1 {z-index: 2; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_3 {z-index: 1; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_3 {z-index: 2; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_2 {z-index: 1; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_2 {z-index: 2; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_4 {z-index: 1; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}
div img_191_0_4 {z-index: 2; visibility: visible; opacity: 1;}

However I cannot find anywhere in the php or css files,  a div of these images,  so it does not seem to connect to anything and affect things.

Hi Karen!

This will not work by just adding CSS selectors. To achieve this you will have to patch the plugin by (a) modifying the file besps.php (Joomla!1.5) to set the images to the according CSS values and by  (b) modifying the JavaScript besps.js.

keep visibility of all slides
8 Saturday, 16 April 2011 23:20
Karen

First of all THANKS for this plugin it does exactly what I need.  I'm wondering if this is possible:  I want this effect on my frontpage-  appear as a stack of photos are pinned to a board.  They are layered, that is staggered this wasy and that, not straight, one on top of other, so the edges and corners of the ones underneath are visible while each 'active' slide has been brought to on top.  So as the top one fades out and goes underneath (or wherever it goes  in  'slideshow land) it can be seen underneath as can the others.  Is this possible?  Is something in the code causing them to be invisible when they are not on top?  Thanks for any help :)

simpleslideshow not working
7 Saturday, 16 April 2011 02:17
Karen

Hi, after looking at and trying a few others, I have my heart set on your slideshow it's exactly what I want.  However it doesn't work for some reason.  I am using Joomla 1.5.23 (just updated) on localhost.  I have image path as images,  and a folder with  'simpleslideshow'  inside images,  so i enter code like this in article:   {*besps}simpleslideshow{/besps*} but instead of slides I get that code showing up on the slideshow.  I tried inserting the code in an article, and having that article load into a custom html module (that shows articles using article ID)  and I tried just inserting it into an article that was in a custom content module,  and nothign worked.  I have legacy plugin enabled as well.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Hi Karen!

Did I just answer a comment of you that indicates, that you managed to get the plugin up and running or are you sharing the same name?

If it is the latter, please check if the plugin works if you open the article you inserted the code in the frontend in which case the extension you are using to display it at a module position could cause the problem. If so - please check the page "FAQ&Troubleshooting (menu at the left), it lists two extensions reported to work with this plugin.

I believe I followed the step by step directions (they were great btw) but my links don't work. I also don't understand why the folder holding the images that can't be found is twice. Sometimes I really hate learning curves - Joomla! 1.6 is new to me but I refuse to go back to 1.5.---
the url is http://www.qualitylandscapingandwaterfeatures.com/

If you need to look at the back end please let me know.

Thank you for any help you can advise.

{*besps}frontpageslide{/besps*}

This is what I have in my article to call the images. (It has always been this)

/images/frontpageslide

This is what I have in the plugin under "Other Settings" Image root - I never inserted the path twice and don't know why it is like that. I apologize for being a problem but am at the point of taming this plugin or just not using it. It does exactly what I need it to do.

I did follow your directions exactly. I will go over them one more time. Thanks for your patience.

Hi Sandra!

"The "frontpageslide" is only once both in the plugin and the article" ... and this causes the plugin to fail. Please check the page "Howto Plugin" (menu at the left) or just move your mouse over the parameter "Image Root" in the backend of the plugin. In both places it is stated that the content of the parameter "Image Root" is added to the path/folder in the code in your article automatically! The "Image Root" is meant as the top level folder all of your images are stored below and - usually there is no need to change it. The parameter exists because some people store their images out of the default image folder (/images in Joomla!1.6) and allows them to target this folder.

In your case:

1.) Set the parameter "Image Root" to /images/
2.) In your article call the slideshow with {*besps}frontpageslide{/besps*} ... without the asterisks

3.) To reuse the plugin at an arbitrary place in your site for e.g. the folder /images/subfolder/anotherfolder/secondslideshow, in the respective article enter the code: {*besps}subfolder/anotherfolder/secondslideshow{/besps*}... without the asterisks

Simple slide show

Sandra Bombard

There is another image rotator that I have used in the past and tried again when I had trouble with the "Simple Picture Slideshow" am having trouble linking to the image/media folder. Do you think it could be a problem with 1.6 or am I missing something in the new layout. The "frontpageslide" is only once both in the plugin and the article. I looked at that about 100 (exaggeration) times. I would like to use this plug in several times throughout the site and right now I am stuck. Thanks.

@Sandra Bombard

Hi Sandra!

Please make sure that you didn't add the last part of the path "frontpageslide" twice (in the path to the image root in the backend of the plugin AND in the code in your article/module).
