Joomla: Very Simple Image Gallery
Written by Andreas Berger
Saturday, 19 April 2008 07:47

The bretteleben.de "Very Simple Image Gallery" Plugin for Joomla!2.5 and Joomla!3.1 is a downgrade of the ingenious plugin "Simple Image Gallery" from Fotis Evangelou und George Chouliaras back to a "Web 1.0" gallery. The modified version comes without a lightbox, the plugin shows one large image, followed by thumbnails.

Why? Look, as stylish and usability-oriented the whole category of "Web 2.0" galleries may be, they have - from my point of view - a serious disadvantage. The hide the web page from the visitor. If you run ads on your site, this is a not-so-desired effect. You don´t care about search engine optimization, keywords, backlinks and so on to see your banners, skyscrapers, rectangles and link blocks disappear behind a black curtain - out of sight and unclickable.

Features:

- supports .jpg, .png und .gif
- can be aligned in your content item left, right, centered, float left or float right
- thumbnails optional below, left or right of the main image
- optional split galleries into multiple sets
- as many galleries per content item as you want
- every gallery can be configured individually (Parameter Overrides)
- optional show title and/or text with every single picture (Captions)
- optional show default title/text for the whole gallery
- optional link every single image to a different target (Links)
- optional use a default link for the whole gallery
- optional link the image to the original image file
- scale thumbnails optional proportionally or cropped
- works with and without JavaScript
- does not require a JavaScript Framework (Mootools, JQery)!
- change main image onClick or onHover

New in Version 1.6.8:

- language files
- available for Joomla!3.1

Installation and Usage

A step by step tutorial on installation and usage can be found at Howto Plugin .
The possibilities the code inside the article offers can be found at Howto Plugin Code .
In addition you find some samples in the menu at the left.

Notice:
If you modified the stylesheet vsig.css, you should save it because it gets overwritten during an update.

Limitations/Preview:

This version of the plugin uses one script, doing the whole work. This may cause - when using very large image-files - the maximum execution time of PHP to be exceeded on your server. If this happens, the script fails with an error.

In this case, just refresh the page one or two times. This should be enough to get all images scaled. As soon as the plugin in configured and all images are scaled, everything works fine and your visitors will not be affected. Anyway, the next version of the plugin will come with an extra-file, doing the work of scaling.

Requirements

The plugin requires the PHP GD library to generate the images and thumbnails.

Compatibility

The plugin is tested successful with Joomla 2.5 and 3.1. Anyway, using it aside with one or another existing plugin/modul/component may bring to light problems i haven't foreseen. I suggest a test run before using it on a live site and stand by for your questions and suggestions.

License

Following the guidelines of the original, the "Simple Image Gallery", the plugin is licensed under the GNU Public License (www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).

update Version Joomla!2.5 and 3.1: 1.6.8

- fixes a bug with PHP5.4
- available for Joomla!3.x
- language files

Hi Rob!

Set the parameter "Use sets of size" to a value smaller than the number of images in the respective folder.

Mike Abe

Hi

Installed this on 1.7, followed all steps, uploaded images into "verysimple" folder, went to article and pasted in {*vsig}verysimple{/vsig*} where I wanted it and nothing. One thing i do find is it is wrapped in the P-tag and when I delete them and save, still nothing, then go back in they are still wrapped in the tag !!!

Much help appreciated
Thanks

Hi Mike!

Don't care about the Paragraph-Tag, it is inserted by your WYSIWYG-editor. The plugin removes it (at least it tries) when displaying the gallery. It is not the reason for your problem as long as it wraps the whole code.

Please make sure:
- you are checking if it works from the front-end
- the plugin is activated
- the gallery is not placed in a module (if so, please check the page FAQ&Troubleshooting - menu at the left)
- you are using the code without asterisks (I added them to your comment to prevent the code from getting executed here)

If the problem persists, please provide a link to the page, I will have a look at it.

sample 3, captions in a second gallery in one article

I put 2 galleries in one article, but the captions only work in the first gallery.

How can i show the captions in the second gallery?

@sonia

Hi sonia!

Make sure, that the code for the captions of the second gallery have the first parameter set to "1". This first parameter tells the plugin to which gallery a caption belongs. The plugin numbers the galleries, ordered by their occurrence in the article, starting with "0".

Sample:
{*vsig}folder1{/vsig*}
{*vsig}folder2{/vsig*}
{*vsig_c}0|pic01_folder1.jpg|myTitelA1|myTextA1{/vsig_c*} ... a caption for the 1th gallery
{*vsig_c}0|pic02_folder1.jpg|myTitelA2|myTextA2{/vsig_c*} ... a caption for the 1th gallery
{*vsig_c}1|pic01_folder2.jpg|myTitelB1|myTextB2{/vsig_c*} ... a caption for the 2nd gallery
{*vsig_c}1|pic02_folder2.jpg|myTitelB2|myTextB2{/vsig_c*} ... a caption for the 2nd gallery
... all without the asterisks

Editor-Button

Hallo :)

Tolles Plugin, tolle Arbeit!

Call the plugin from a component

Ruben

Hi Andreas,

First congrats on this great plugin! I was wondering how to call the plugin from within a component (for example in: com_test/views/test/tmpl/default.php) if that's possible at all? The regular {*vsig}image{/vsig*} does not seem to work.. :/

Hi Ruben!

Beside of my little hack "Weblinks with Thumbshots" I haven't engaged myself in developing components up till now, but as far as I know, it's on your component to execute content plugins. The Joomla! framework offers the required functionality. Maybe you want to check forum.joomla.org and/or docs.joomla.org for further information.

Thumbnails at the top

Valeriy

Hi!

Very Simple Image Gallery is a great image gallery.
Unfortunately it lacks an opportunity to put thumbnails at the top. There are left, right, bottom but there is no top. It's a pity. Is it possible to do this anyhow?

Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, but up till now the plugin comes without such a layout.

Sets button controls

Shikin

Hi, I am pleased with the plugin but there is one thing i would like to ask, how do i change the position of the set controls to be under the thumbnails instead of under the main image? The thumbnails is positioned to the right side of the main image. Please help. Would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

@Shikin

A. Berger

Hi Shikin!

There is no such predefined layout because this is not a "safe" position for the controls (i.e. if the columns of thumbnails are higher than the main image the buttons are shown down below too).
Anyway, you can achieve this behavior by opening the stylesheet of the plugin (/plugins/content/plugin_vsig - Joomla!1.5) with a text editor and adding the width you have set for the gallery (e.g. 500px) to the selector .vsig_ctrls {}, e.g.: .vsig_ctrls {margin:0px !important;width:500px}

Link to Original Image
66 Tuesday, 01 November 2011 22:57
Laurie

Using: J!1.7.x - plg_verysimpleimagegallery_v1.6.5_J1.7.zip and Joomla 1.7.2

When I upload images via the Joomla uploader, linking to the original image works as normal.
However, when I upload a large number of images for a large gallery using other methods, the main image links to the URL of the page with the VSIG code attached and takes me to another version of the page I'm already on.
Eg: wwwDOTsouthimageDOTnet/new-outback/coast/4-landscape-and-micro-landscape-aragunnu#g_vsig4_0
The other methods I've used are JCE, JFUpload, FTP and File Manager in cPanel.
Of course, I could live with this, but it would be nice, if possible, to upload 50 images for a large gallery, all in one go.

Any ideas on this?

Thanks,
Laurie.

Hi Laurie!

To be honest - not really.

Is there a gallery that shows the mis-behavior you described? The one you posted works fine for me (great photos, btw.).

Andreas
