Joomla: Very Simple Image Gallery
Written by Andreas Berger

The bretteleben.de "Very Simple Image Gallery" Plugin for Joomla!2.5 and Joomla!3.1 is a downgrade of the ingenious plugin "Simple Image Gallery" from Fotis Evangelou und George Chouliaras back to a "Web 1.0" gallery. The modified version comes without a lightbox, the plugin shows one large image, followed by thumbnails.

Why? Look, as stylish and usability-oriented the whole category of "Web 2.0" galleries may be, they have - from my point of view - a serious disadvantage. The hide the web page from the visitor. If you run ads on your site, this is a not-so-desired effect. You don´t care about search engine optimization, keywords, backlinks and so on to see your banners, skyscrapers, rectangles and link blocks disappear behind a black curtain - out of sight and unclickable.

Features:

- supports .jpg, .png und .gif
- can be aligned in your content item left, right, centered, float left or float right
- thumbnails optional below, left or right of the main image
- optional split galleries into multiple sets
- as many galleries per content item as you want
- every gallery can be configured individually (Parameter Overrides)
- optional show title and/or text with every single picture (Captions)
- optional show default title/text for the whole gallery
- optional link every single image to a different target (Links)
- optional use a default link for the whole gallery
- optional link the image to the original image file
- scale thumbnails optional proportionally or cropped
- works with and without JavaScript
- does not require a JavaScript Framework (Mootools, JQery)!
- change main image onClick or onHover

New in Version 1.6.8:

- language files
- available for Joomla!3.1

Installation and Usage

A step by step tutorial on installation and usage can be found at Howto Plugin .
The possibilities the code inside the article offers can be found at Howto Plugin Code .
In addition you find some samples in the menu at the left.

Notice:
If you modified the stylesheet vsig.css, you should save it because it gets overwritten during an update.

Limitations/Preview:

This version of the plugin uses one script, doing the whole work. This may cause - when using very large image-files - the maximum execution time of PHP to be exceeded on your server. If this happens, the script fails with an error.

In this case, just refresh the page one or two times. This should be enough to get all images scaled. As soon as the plugin in configured and all images are scaled, everything works fine and your visitors will not be affected. Anyway, the next version of the plugin will come with an extra-file, doing the work of scaling.

Requirements

The plugin requires the PHP GD library to generate the images and thumbnails.

Compatibility

The plugin is tested successful with Joomla 2.5 and 3.1. Anyway, using it aside with one or another existing plugin/modul/component may bring to light problems i haven't foreseen. I suggest a test run before using it on a live site and stand by for your questions and suggestions.

License

Following the guidelines of the original, the "Simple Image Gallery", the plugin is licensed under the GNU Public License (www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).

update Version Joomla!2.5 and 3.1: 1.6.8

- fixes a bug with PHP5.4

can be used with a regular website

I know you have probably not tested this at all but can I use this on a regular website without joomla?

Hi Bruce!

No, the plugin relies on the functionality provided by the Joomla! framework. It is an extension to Joomla!, not a standalone script/application.

Auto link doesnt work

Jorge V.

Hi, Thank you for this extension.

I only have one problem. The auto-link option doesn't link to the original image. Instead it links to the same page where the gallery is.
Any ideas in order not to write the explicit link for each image in each gallery?

Thank you.

Hi Ramy!

A possible reason for this is that it's a plugin, not a module. Check the plugin manager!

Hi Paul!

One possibility would be to modify the stylesheet, the other is to patch the plugin. Let's give the latter a try.

Open the file /plugins/content/vsig.php and find line number 241:
$vsig_cssadd.=".vsig_ctrls_".$identifier." {display:block;width:".($_im_area_+10)."px;h ... and so on

replace:
$_im_area_+10

with:
$_imwidth_

Save. Done.

How can I manage - One: hide thumb nails, Two: pop-up lightbox
11 Wednesday, 20 April 2011 18:46
anna

Hi, I am new to Joomla.

I installed "Very Simple Image Gallery".
I want a pop-up lightbox. How can I do that?
It seems like it doesn't have a function for that.
If it doesn't, I am trying to add an extiona for a pop-up thumb nail lightbox then, I need to hide the thumb nails. How can I hide the thumb nails? I want to keep the "Prev" Set "Next" though.

Hi Anna!

The categorie "Photo Gallery" at extensions.joomla.org at the moment lists more than 80 extensions and about 95% of these extensions come with a modal window (lightbox, blackbox, graybox, thinbox, fatbox, whateverbox). This one intentionally does not.
I would suggest to save the time it take to patch this extension and choose a gallery that fits your needs out of the box. :)

Andreas

Your Display selection below your comments isn't letting me select to view all comments. It reloads the page showing 10 and resetting itself to 10.

Hi Austin!

Thanks for the link to your site. I checked it and your front page does not contain the plugin. I checked some sub pages but - without seeing it. Would it be possible to point me to the page that shows the plugin directly?
In addition, it would be nice if you could activate the feature sets at the least for this gallery. This makes it a lot easier to fix the problem.

Best regards
Andreas

The gallery of yours that is in use right now is just set to display all due to the issue.

Hi Austin!

I know - and I have already checked the page of the developer for a fix but up till now haven't found one. Anyway, turning over works and if you want to search the comments, it may be an alternative to use the page search instead of displaying 700+ comments on one page. :)

About your question: It' probably a problem with one of the stylesheets of your template. Please provide a link to the page, I will have a look at it.

The plugin looks great except that the Next and Previous buttons for some reason are on the same line as the thumbnails instead of just above like in your demo.  Fix?

Hi Mahendra S. Yadav!

It's not a slideshow but a gallery, anyway - you find the link to download the plugin just above the comments on this page - and the links to the documentation a little higher. Have fun!

Signblaster

Hi,

I would like to include MP4 and MP3 files into the Gallery. These files do not need to activate untill selected from the gallery. Is there a way to present a plceholder image that links to a multimedia file and will play the media file type when selected

Regards Signblaster

A. Berger

Hi Signblaster!

The plugin offers the possibility to link single images to arbitrary targets which - of course - could be media files too but there is no functionality to display them in the place of the main image.
Maybe you want to check the category "Multimedia" > "Multimedia Display" at extensions.joomla.org, it lists extensions that allow to display different types of media (images, movies, HTML, ...).

Best regards
Andreas

Hi Ezequiel!

Yes, the feature "Links" allows to link every image to an arbitrary target. Please check the page "Howto Plugin Code" (find the link in the menu at the left), for more information.

Best regards
Andreas
