The bretteleben.de "Very Simple Image Gallery" Plugin for Joomla!2.5 and Joomla!3.1 is a downgrade of the ingenious plugin "Simple Image Gallery" from Fotis Evangelou und George Chouliaras back to a "Web 1.0" gallery. The modified version comes without a lightbox, the plugin shows one large image, followed by thumbnails.
Why? Look, as stylish and usability-oriented the whole category of "Web 2.0" galleries may be, they have - from my point of view - a serious disadvantage. The hide the web page from the visitor. If you run ads on your site, this is a not-so-desired effect. You don´t care about search engine optimization, keywords, backlinks and so on to see your banners, skyscrapers, rectangles and link blocks disappear behind a black curtain - out of sight and unclickable.
Features:
- supports .jpg, .png und .gif - can be aligned in your content item left, right, centered, float left or float right - thumbnails optional below, left or right of the main image - optional split galleries into multiple sets - as many galleries per content item as you want - every gallery can be configured individually (Parameter Overrides) - optional show title and/or text with every single picture (Captions) - optional show default title/text for the whole gallery - optional link every single image to a different target (Links) - optional use a default link for the whole gallery - optional link the image to the original image file - scale thumbnails optional proportionally or cropped - works with and without JavaScript - does not require a JavaScript Framework (Mootools, JQery)! - change main image onClick or onHover
New in Version 1.6.8:
- language files - available for Joomla!3.1
Installation and Usage
A step by step tutorial on installation and usage can be found at Howto Plugin . The possibilities the code inside the article offers can be found at Howto Plugin Code . In addition you find some samples in the menu at the left.
Notice: If you modified the stylesheet vsig.css, you should save it because it gets overwritten during an update.

Limitations/Preview:
This version of the plugin uses one script, doing the whole work. This may cause - when using very large image-files - the maximum execution time of PHP to be exceeded on your server. If this happens, the script fails with an error.
In this case, just refresh the page one or two times. This should be enough to get all images scaled. As soon as the plugin in configured and all images are scaled, everything works fine and your visitors will not be affected. Anyway, the next version of the plugin will come with an extra-file, doing the work of scaling.
Requirements
The plugin requires the PHP GD library to generate the images and thumbnails.
Compatibility
The plugin is tested successful with Joomla 2.5 and 3.1. Anyway, using it aside with one or another existing plugin/modul/component may bring to light problems i haven't foreseen. I suggest a test run before using it on a live site and stand by for your questions and suggestions.
License
Following the guidelines of the original, the "Simple Image Gallery", the plugin is licensed under the GNU Public License (www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).

Hi,
first of all really a great plugin.Thanks.
Is it possible to have the thumbs centered at the bottom of the main image?
cheers,
Hi August!
Use the setting "below - justified" for the parameter "Thumbnails are shown" in the configuration panel of the plugin.
Best regards
Andreas
Figured it out thanks - Don't unzip the file!
I just downloaded the zip file and I can't see a plugin? There are .xml, .php, .html, .css, .js, .png files but no plugin. So when I use the joomla extension I navigate through all the folders and having nothing to install.
Look in your trashcan for the *.zip file! My mac automatically unzips the files on my "download" folder but for installation in joomla you need the zip file. You could also try to zip the extracted content to a zip file and install from there.
I'm using this and its brilliant but I'd like to use it for a wordpress site, is it possible to do a WP version or is it already available? There's loads of galleries available but I'd rather use one I know works :)
thanks for this great plugin :)
Hi Andy!
There is no WordPress version of this plugin and according to the number of galleries already available for WordPress I have - at this time - no plans to create one.
Best regards
Andreas
add its modul my web page is www.afyon03.com. thank you very much
The feature "Link original image" is nice, but changing it would be better! For now, my gallery have"Switch on hover thumb" on, got 3 thumbnail's columns with a total of 15 pictures per set. The thing I'd like is that instead of having to click on the main picture to see it, we could click on the thumbnail to open the selected picture.
For example : if you got 3 thumbnail's columns for a total of 9 pictures per set, it's kinda hard to see the original size of the picture in the middle (the O on the "picture" after this).

Hi Krimmi83!
I'm sorry, but the first and main task of the link on the thumbnail is and will stay to change the main image.

Hello, I am getting this error when trying to access the article which uses the plugin. Can you help?
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 14016 bytes) in /home/content/45/8589845/html/union/plugins/content/verysimpleimagegallery/files/verysimpleimagegalleryhelper.php on line 163
Hi Regina!
Please check the page "FAQ&Troubleshooting" (menu at the left), it deals with this problem.

I like very much the layout of Very Simple Image with the one exception of no captions. I was happy to purchase Simple Image Gallery Pro to get this functionality - but then I discovered that the layout is not the same! Is there any way to make the Pro package look the same as VSI, with the thumbnails down the right side and no popup windows?
Hi Deb0!
The "Very Simple Image Gallery" allows the usage of captions since version 1.2.0 (March 2009). Check the page "Howto Plugin Code" (menu at the left) to learn more about this feature.
About the plugin "Simple Image Gallery Pro": I confess I have no idea if it allows the layout you want to use, but I suggest to check the support forum of the developer (Joomlaworks), maybe the question already came up.
Best regards
Andreas
Hi.
Some of my pictures gets blank (very small) in the "vsig_images" and "vsig_thumbs" directory. And therefore they are shown as black pictures. It's not all the pictures.
All my pictures is from the same webcam. They are jpg pictures 640*480 55KB.
Regards JAn
Hi Jan!
Open the respective original images directly from the address bar of the browser (www.yourdomain.com/images/stories/yourfolder/yourimage.jpg) to check if they are corrupted (would explain the behavior).
If this is not the reason, please provide a link to the page, I will have a look at it.
Best regards
Andreas
